The College Application Process: A brief overview

Selecting a major
You're confident you want to study business, computer science, or mechanical engineering. You dream of being a journalist, a filmmaker, or a healthcare provider. You have too many interests, or nothing has truly sparked your imagination. Whether you're committed to a field of study or completely clueless, we'll help you understand your options, including what it means to be admitted directly to a major and if that's the right choice for you.

College List
It might seem like there are only a couple dozen  "great" colleges. In reality, there are thousands of reputable institutions of higher learning in the U.S. with countless international options. Whether aiming for a well-known university or searching for a hidden gem, we'll work with you to develop a balanced list of reach, target, and likely schools that meet your requirements for size, location, academics, athletics, school spirit, culture, cost, and more.

Visits/Interviews/Demonstrated Interest
We'll show you how to make the most of each opportunity to demonstrate your interest in and excitement for the colleges on your list
from visiting a campus in person, taking a virtual tour, interviewing or communicating with an admissions advisor, or following a
college on social media,

Essays
Whether it's the Common App essay, supplemental and scholarship essays, artistic statements, or letters of continued interest,
we'll make sure your writing is engaging while showcasing your personality, perspective, interests, goals, and skills.

Application Deadlines
What's the difference between rolling admissions, early action, early decision (1 and 2), regular decision, and restricted early action?
Good question! We'll explain each deadline and create an effective application strategy that makes sense for you.

Standardized Tests
ACT or SAT? Is test-optional still an option? Should you submit scores to some schools and not others? The answers are as individual
as you are.
We're here to help you figure it out.

Common Application
With one place to submit applications to almost every college, the process should be easy right? Well, it's a little more complicated
than that. To ensure that your applications are filled out properly and without costly mistakes,
we'll review each section of the
Common Application, providing tips on highlighting your extracurricular activities, honors, and academic history.
We'll even help you connect the Common App to high school college portals like Naviance, Schoolinks, Scoir, and Maialearning.

Resume/Portfolio/Video Interviews
Depending on which college and academic program you are applying to, you might be required to submit additional materials like a resume, academic paper, musical theater/acting/dance audition video, photos of your artwork, creative writing samples, or video interviews. If you need assistance creating, editing, or preparing these materials, we're here.

Finances
It’s no secret that college is a major investment. What isn't clear-cut is the price you'll actually have to pay. Depending on your financial situation, academic record, or other special status (recruited athlete), you might receive financial and/or merit aid or scholarships/grants. We’ll help you understand how to evaluate the cost of college, potential return on investment, availability of merit scholarships, grants, and financial aid, and remind you to fill out the FAFSA and CSS.

Post-Application and Decision Time:
Once an application is submitted, there's more to do, including setting up applicant portals, filling out SARE (Self-Reported Academic Record), and ensuring that each college has all required materials, Whether accepted, deferred, postponed, or waitlisted, we'll explain the next steps and how to evaluate your options.
